Chocolate Rice – It’s Really a Thing

Chocolate rice is a popular Filipino dish that is usually served as a breakfast meal or dessert. But you can also have it as a snack. You can prepare this creamy, filling and delicious meal in just a few minutes. It is especially ideal for those cold winter days when you want something rich and chocolaty to warm you up. This meal can be eaten cold, warm or hot. Most people prefer it plain but you can add some evaporated milk to make the perfect comfort dish. Here is a simple chocolate rice recipe.


  • 1 cup of rice
  • 2 ounces cocoa powder (You can also use sweetened or semi sweet chocolate or chocolate chips.)
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 ounces plain milk or evaporated milk
  • 2 ounces sugar (this can be raw or granulated white sugar depending on your preferences.) Maple syrup and honey can be great alternatives to sugar.
  • Salt
  • 2 sprigs of lemon leaves


Put two cups of water in a large pan. Add the rice and salt to taste.

Place the pan on the stove over high heat and bring it to a boil.

Stir the mixture a few times to prevent the rice from sticking.

Reduce the heat to low once the water starts to boil. Allow the rice to simmer for about 10 minutes. The rice should be firm and cooked. Drain excess water but the rice should be a little moist.

Turn off the stove and stir in the cocoa powder, chocolate chips or chopped chocolate. If you are using cocoa powder, you need to make a paste with water before you add it to the rice. Add the sugar and cover the pan to allow the chocolate to melt. This can take about 5 minutes.

Uncover the pan and stir the rice to ensure the chocolate spreads evenly.

Add the lemon leaves and allow them to sit on top of the rice and chocolate mixture for between 5 and 10 minutes. This will allow the lemon flavor to soak into the dish.

Pour the evaporated milk or plain milk over the rice and chocolate mixture. This will make it creamy. You can also use some coconut cream instead of milk to make your chocolate rice even more delicious.

Add or reduce some of the ingredients to suit your taste preferences. Adding sugar will make it sweeter while a little more chocolate increases the deep brown color.

Serve hot, warm or cold. This meal pairs well with some biscuits if you are serving it for breakfast.
