TOP CHEF MASTER CARMEN GONZALEZ INFUSES HER SIGNATURE LATIN FLAVORS IN MERCADITO’S MAY TACO FOR STRENGTH
The TV hostess creates Lamb Belly Tacos with braised lamb belly, pickled jicama, carrots, scallion, and lettuce
(CHICAGO; May 8, 2014)—The May Taco for Strength from Mercadito (108 W. Kinzie St.) gets the Top Chef treatment from chef, restaurateur, and media personality Carmen Gonzalez. Each month, Mercadito’s Chef Patricio Sandoval invites a distinguished chef to support Share Our Strength and its mission of ending childhood hunger. The New York-based chef’s Lamb Belly Taco will be available at all Mercadito restaurants throughout the month of May.
Well-known not only for her culinary abilities, but also for her activism, Gonzalez donated her 2010 winnings from Bravo’s Top Chef to ASPCA, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing cruelty towards animals. She also serves on the board of directors for Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, a national organization devoted to the promotion of women in the restaurant industry. “I have been a long-time supporter of Share Our Strength and my participation in Taco for Strength allows me to combine two of my greatest passions, food and philanthropy,” says Gonzalez. “I really like the combination of tender braised lamb belly with the tart bite of pickled jicama and finishing with the refreshing crunch of raw scallions, carrots, and lettuce for the perfect balance of texture and flavor.”
In 2013, Mercadito sold a grand total of 2,595 Tacos for Strength in its Chicago, New York, and Miami locations, raising nearly $2,000 to benefit Share Our Strength. This is the first year that Mercadito has engaged accomplished chefs outside of the restaurants’ markets to create a signature taco. Five percent of the sales from Gonzalez’s taco will be donated to Share Our Strength. The tacos will be available for dinner (four per order) for $16.50 or for lunch (three per order) for $12.50. Reservations for Mercadito are recommended and can be made by calling 312.329.9555.
